SHARON LUCILLE OLANIO

"Little Miwok"

Sharon Lucille Olanio, affectionately known as “Little Miwok,” passed away at home on November 26, 2024, in Placerville, California, at the age of 81. Born on July 26, 1943, in Sacramento, she was a cherished member of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. Her Grandmother Williams registered her as a tribal member when she was a young girl and she instilled in her a deep appreciation for Native American culture.

Sharon was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Avelino Olanio II (Jr.), and he always declared, “Sharon is always right.” Sharon’s life was enriched by her children, Yolanda and Avelino III (Tony). Additionally, she had a nephew, Joey, whom she raised as her own after her older sister Beverly passed away. Sharon and Jr. shared a life filled with family, work, love, and dogs.

Sharon was a cherished grandmother to Yolanda’s kids: Billy, Joseph, Jerrell, Anthony and Marquita Hester and to Tony’s Kids: Avelino IV, Latasha, Aaron, Moana, Kalani, Kai and Koda Olanio. Also, she was a beloved auntie and great grandmother to many.

Sharon was the daughter of Alice Hamilton and Bob Kaia and the loving sister to Beverly, Sue, Janis, Alana and one brother David. In her younger years, her bond with her older sister Beverly was particularly strong, as they were known as “partners in crime” during their tomboyish childhood when they enjoyed horseback riding, bicycling, softball and wandering the neighborhood.

A graduate of Hiram Johnson High School, Sharon worked in retail at Kids Mart and Montgomery Wards, and later at the casino, where she did groundskeeping and cut brush. She was known for her toughness and refusal to complain, and she was a “get it done” type of person.

Her love for animals was unparalleled, and she was a devoted caretaker to many dogs and cats throughout her life. At the time of her passing, she was survived by three dogs, including her favorite dog, Dude, and her blind cat, Sparkles.

Sharon’s family has countless memories of swimming, camping, rafting, trips to the casino and family gatherings. Her humor and warmth will be remembered by all who knew her, as will her favorite expression, “Ah Shiiit!” Sharon’s spirit and love for dogs will forever be her legacy.
