Sacramento Memorial Lawn honors the life of Ms. Glora M. Jones

Glora Mae Jones was born on August 19, 1934, on ten acres of land in the rural Logan County of Kansas, to Thelma Ward and Clifford. She was the third of eight brothers and sisters.

In early 1953, Glora met Milton Jones while he was on leave from service in the Korean War. He was smitten by her sweet smile and long legs and told her he would marry her. After the Korean War ended in July 1953, Milton returned to Wichita, Kansas, and asked for Glora's hand in marriage. They were wed shortly after his return in a simple yet beautiful ceremony in a friend's living room on November 24, 1954. They remained married for 56 years until Milton's passing on August 19, 2011.

In 1959 Milton accepted a position at Aerojet Rocketdyne building space shuttle boosters. The Joneses migrated their family west to California and settled in the Glen Elders neighborhood.

Glora's first job was with Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. She was one of the first Black women to become an airplane technician. Glora began her faithful state service in 1963 as a Junior Clerk with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. In 1984, She became a real estate agent and broker with Garcia Realty. While selling real estate, Glora continued to climb the civil service ladder and accepted a Career Executive Assignment as a Deputy Director for Licensing and Administration with the Office of Real Estate Appraisers.

Of her 32 years of State civil service, 29 were supervisory and management experience. She naturally exuded a high degree of diplomacy and professionalism.

She served on special projects for the Office of Criminal Justice Planning. She was loaned to the Office of Emergency Services as a state manager for Disaster Applications Centers, both in the aftermath of the 1992 civil unrest following the Rodney King verdict and after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Glora loved to travel and was always quick to hop on the "next thing smokin". She loved traveling domestically to visit and support family and friends. Internationally, she visited New Zealand, Australia,  Jamaica, and Kenya. After her trip to Kenya, she and Martha Tate Glass formed Sisters of Nia, a nonprofit organization created to help young women in Kenya.

In 1986 Glora became made Antioch Progressive Baptist her church home.  She became Superintendent of the Sunday School at Antioch and a member of the Board of Directors for the Healthy Environment/ Loving Parents Service (HELPS), a foster family nonprofit Agency.

A Breast Cancer survivor since 1985, she was a staunch cancer prevention advocate and supported local women fighting breast cancer through organizations such as Carrie's Touch. She also served in various leadership roles within the Golf Course Terrace Neighborhood Association.

Glora earned the trust and respect of all who worked with her in State service and the community. Throughout her career and in her community leadership, she shed her love through leadership and wisdom to the people of California.

While Glora loved to work and serve in the community, she beamed when she spoke of her family. During her union with Milton they raised four children (Linda, Pam, Kevin, and Eric), three grandchildren (Brian, Traci, and Monroe), and two great-grandchildren (Adae and Aamani). While Milton was the King of the Jones castle, Glora was the Queen of its heart. For decades, their corner home on Hogan Drive was known in the Golf Course Terrace neighborhood as a place for celebrations, neighborhood parties, and respite. She adored her family and friends!! And they adored her.

Her family, neighbors, and co-workers often sat at her feet for wisdom and guidance. They came to get a piece of her faith and trust in the Lord to help carry them through whatever they were facing in their own seasons of life. In every milestone she achieved, she praised God. And in every challenge she faced, she KNEW that her God would see her through. She KNEW, without a doubt, that her strength came from the Lord. Her mere presence exuded God's love and light. She had a knack for bringing out the very best in others. Her legacy of faith and love is truly a jewel in her crown. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.

She is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters, her son Kevin, daughter Pamela, husband Milton, grandson Brian, and son Eric.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister Wilma (Las Cruces, NM), her daughter Linda, her granddaughter Traci, her grandson Monroe, her great-grandchildren Adae and Aamani, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, chosen family, church family, and community family.
