Bernard Eugene Mitchell was born on September 5, 1950 in Fairfield, California to the parents of Alfred and Gussie Mitchell. He was the oldest of 5 children. In 1955, the family relocated to Willows, California. Bernard graduated from Willows High School and then moved to Redding, California to attend Shasta College, where he studied business before he was drafted into the US Army as a medic. After completing his duties, he returned to Redding. During this time he became a proud father of two girls, Alonda and Simone Mitchell. Bernard then decided to move to Houston, Texas where he lived for 7 years working construction. After that time he moved to Sacramento, California where he met and married the love of his life: Sherry Mitchell. Later on in their union he became the proud father of a son: Bernard Jr. He began working for Campbell Soup Can Plant and Silgan Container as a mechanic. He absolutely loved to work with his hands. He always looked for ways to improve the work environment. He worked 32 years before retiring from Silgan in 2013. Bernard was known for his infectious smile that everyone enjoyed, along with his kind heart and words of wisdom. He was a very giving person of his time and money. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, bicycling with his wife, cooking, gardening, building custom bikes, and spending time with the grandchildren. He was always seen building things around the house while listening to Gospel music or spending time out in the yard cultivating his green thumb with his granddaughter, Ariel, by his side. Years ago, Bernard and Sherry (wife) dedicated their lives to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, where he lived out the rest of his life attending church and participating in Bible Studies and Sunday School until he became ill on January 9, 2021. Bernard is preceded in death by his parents; Alfred and Gussie Mitchell, his siblings; Anthony, DeLeon, and Janet, and his uncle; Gregory Dupree. He is survived by his wife of 34 years; Sherry Mitchell, his children; Alonda Mays, Simone Mitchell, and Bernard Mitchell Jr., his step-daughter; Angelina Brown, his grandchildren; Ariel Williams and Isaiah Johnson, his brother; Richard Mitchell (Evonnie), and many nephews, nieces, and a host of family and friends.
