TTOS President & Secretary

Tom Gibsons Secretary

By Tami Jo Nix

The Madera Tribune

For a very long period in my life I worked as Tom Gibsons secretary. Our first stint we were in charge of the Sacramento Valley Division of the Toy Train Operating Society. Although the exact dates are a bit fuzzy I know it was in the early 1980s. He served as Sac Valley Division President with me as Division Secretary for at least four years if not longer.

We also spent multiple terms as TTOS National President and Secretary.

My husband Fred and I first met Tom when he brought a train layout to the Sacramento

Gottschalks, a major upscale California department store, now defunct. We were in town for Freds work conference on water and heard about the display.

Little did we know how entwined our lives would become. We got to know the whole Gibson family, his late wife Dianna and his children Eddie and Karen.

At one point he and Dianna had a retail store called Teddies and Trains in Old Sacramento. We often visited the store and shared many good times together.

Our friendship developed to the point where we even enjoyed the Gibson hospitality and spent the night sleeping on the hide-a-bed in the family den. We enjoyed meals together at various toy train conventions from California to York, Pennsylvania and beyond.

I have been asked to write a memorial piece for the TTOS Bulletin and would like to speak with Eddie and Karen. If anyone has contact information on them please call me 559-706-0980. Thank you.

Readers please contact Tami Jo Nix by emailing tamijonix@gmail.com or following @TamiJoNix on Twitter.

Tom's in Lodi

My best buddy came down to Lodi a few weeks ago. I'd been after him to have UCD let him out for a field trip. As soon as I heard he was going to be in town, went down to see him. Got to the place so early on Monday morning the staff thought I was his doctor. When he woke up, I told him and he said "Ya, the Lodi train doctor!", with one of those Tom smiles! He wasn't in town long before going back to UCD.

Called his phone the other day, recording said the subscriber was out of the service area! Da do you think! ANYBODY GOT HEAVEN'S # ?

WE/I will miss him!

Tom was a good toy train friend. He always had suggestions for Kit and me about what to look for in quality trains. Tom will be missed, including his dry humor, smile and laugh. RIP Tom!
