Obituary of Mohinder Singh Rye

Mohinder passed away on September 10, 2014, in Sacramento, CA. Mohinder was born on February 21, 1936, to Bishan and Kartar Rye in Punjab, India, and came to Sacramento in 1950, one of the early Indian immigrants in California. In 1958, Mohinder married Narnjan Kaur of Vancouver, Canada. Mohinder is survived by Narnjan, his wife of 56 years, daughter Inderjit, sons Surrinder and Sukhdev, granddaughters Mohini and Sarina, and many other relatives. In 1968, after the premature death of his father, Mohinder became President of Greyhound Taxi, one of the main taxi companies in Sacramento, a family business for 30 years. A devoted and responsible family man, Mohinder was proud of how he also took care of his mother, until her death in 1997, and his teenage brothers, after his father's death. Possessing a strong work ethic, Mohinder for over 40 years enjoyed actively managing apartment buildings he owned in Midtown Sacramento with his life partner Narnjan. Mohinder was especially proud of telling friends that the apartments financed the U.C. Berkeley educations of his CPA daughter, and dentist and tax attorney sons. As a pioneering trailblazer, respected businessman, and community leader, Mohinder was also proud of sponsoring the admission of relatives and fellow villagers to the United States. In his leisure time, Mohinder enjoyed swimming, golfing, attending SF Giants and Sacramento Kings games, growing fruit trees, traveling, and following news and politics. Mohinder led a full and good life, and he will be missed by many. Visitation will be held Friday, September 19, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sacramento Memorial Lawn, 6100 Stockton Blvd., in Sacramento A funeral ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the same location. A church service will take place thereafter at the Sacramento Sikh Temple, 2301 Evergreen Avenue, West Sacramento.
