Obituary of Susumu "Sus" Satow

Sus passed away quietly at home,comforted by his family and at peace in the presence of God. Preceded in death by his wife and lifetime partner Lily, his parents Riichi and Chieko Satow, his brothers Leo and Ernest, and by his sister Tish. Sus leaves behind devoted children Vernon Satow with Roberta Munson, Hope Baird with husband Richard, Dawn Satow, and Richard Satow with wife Ruby. Also left to miss him are the loving grandchildren who brought great joy to his life - Brandilyn, Ruby, Philip, Elizabeth, Kimiko and Kelly.He is also survived by loyal brothers Bill with wife Betty, Oscar with wife Ruby, and Ted with wife Joylene, by his sisters Chiyo Aiso of Gardenaand Hannah Satow, and by sister-in-law Dale Satow. Beloved cousins, in-laws, comrades and many nephews and nieces are left to miss him as well. His experiences during WWII and after led him to devote much of his later life to the preservation of the history of that time. As a veteran of the US Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team, he was an active member of VFW Post 8985, and served on the board of directors of the 100th-442nd-MIS WWII Memorial Foundation. He worked tirelessly with the Go for Broke Educational Foundation to build the Nisei veterans Go For Broke Monument in Los Angeles, and he also helped establish the Japanese American Archival Collection at CSU-Sacramento. A part of his story was documented in the 2007 Ken Burns series "The War" and in 2011Sus was honored to receive, along with his comrades-in-arms, the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his service to this country. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, February 29 at 11AM at the Mayhew Community Baptist Church (3401 Routiers Road, Sacramento).
