Obituary of Gian Singh

S. Gian Singh was born in June 1941, in Nijjaran, Jalandhar, Punjab, India to parents S. Resham Singh and Harnam Kaur. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New Delhi. Being very fond of Sikhism, he pursued and obtained a 2 year diploma from Gurmat Missionary College in Punjab. A generous and devoted man, S. Gian Singh worked full time while raising a family and arose each day at 4am to attend the Gurdwara, and serve in his community. He was actively and passionately involved in religious and social events especially when it came to sharing the practical aspects of Sikhism with others, a principle which he lived to the end. He worked for 35 years as an Accountant in India, and continued part-time accounting for another 15 years upon his arrival in the United States in 1993. He offered guidance not only in religion, but also with obtaining employment. As President of the Homeowner's Association where he lived in Sacramento, people would come to him for guidance with family issues, ask for assistance with completing forms and applications, and he would often translate on their behalf when necessary, whether it be by phone or in person. His involvement in Sikhism continued in the U.S., as he also served as President of his Gurdwara. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nasib Kaur, 3 sons, 2 sisters, and their families. A message in English that he placed at his bedside, serves as words of advice to us all: "Avoid to criticize, complain, compare, and compete." He will be deeply missed.
