Shirley Jones, an only child, was born to Claudelle Smith and Ella Lucas in Shreveport, Louisiana. She completed her early education in Shreveport. She worked as a property manager while attending Grambling University, where she earned a degree in Nursing. Shirley moved to Sacramento in 1964 with her family. She accepted the Lord and was baptized at New Hope Baptist Church. As a military wife, she and her husband, Everett Jones, traveled to various states and countries, settling back in Sacramento in 1980. She truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Some of her favorite pastimes were cooking, sewing, crafting, and shopping. She was also an avid reader and supporter of Autism Speaks, The Lupus Foundation and Tina B, and The Sacramento Soul Line Dancers. Her love for life was evident in the way that she interacted with other people and their response to her. Shirley will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband Everett Jones, and her sons: Michael W. Smith and Steven Oliver. She leaves to cherish her memory: Daughter Yolanda L Smith-Newby (Philip), sons Donald G. McGraw (Marcia) and Brian D. Oliver (Karissa), 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
